          Precocious, as the Oxford Dictionary (2011) describes, is “having developed certain abilities or inclinations at an early age than is usual or expected.” This word in particular sets the framework for the excerpt that was analysed.

          I immediately saw this word precocious operating through both main characters. ‘The poet’ was precocious through intellect and Red through brawn, “Red’s shoulders were incredibly broad for a boy his age” (Yevtushenko, 1944).

          On the first read through, the excerpt seemed to be portraying a David and Goliath story, which intertextuality and my own personal experiences led me to believe.

          The story is that of a simple one; identifying a young man with a passion, living in a beat up neighbourhood in next to nothing conditions, who has to overcome the stereotypical bully figure that is blocking his chances to pursue his life goals and aspirations
