          Martin Fitzgerald Lawrence was born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, to John Lawrence, a U.S.

          serviceman, and Chlora Lawrence. Named after Martin Luther King Jr. and former President John F. Kennedy, young Martin rarely saw his father, who was often away on military duty.

          After his parents divorced when he was eight, Chlora Lawrence supported her family with multiple jobs, including raising Martin and his five siblings.

          John remained in Germany, while Chlora and her children resided in Queens, New York, and later moved to Landover, Maryland, where Martin attended Thomas G. Pullen Creative and Performing Arts School.
