          The most popular man in Cyprus?

          WORD ON the street this week was that Cypriot businessmen were lining up to sell their companies to Marfin Popular Bank Group Chairman Soud Ba’Alawy.

          Ba’Alawy, who is the CEO of the Dubai Investment Group (DIG), was on the island for 48 hours, during which time he met top business leaders and officials, including President Tassos Papadopoulos.

          What’s not clear yet is who was courting whom.

          Prominent at a select lunch on Thursday at the Hilton, which incidentally came under the Marfin portfolio just before Ba’Alawy’s arrival, were (among others) Nicos Shacolas, Michael Leptos, another large property developer and representatives of the hotel industry.

          Ba’Alawy was greeted like royalty by the men in suits, who constituted per cent of the people there, and everyone was smiling.

          No wonder observers were gossiping.
