He was born on August 17, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Franzen grew up in Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Swarthmore College. During his college years, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, which allowed him to study abroad at universities in West Germany.
He currently resides in the East Side of New York and is a regular contributor to "The New Yorker" magazine.
